Rapunzel Jackson

Synopsis

Rapunzel Jackson is pulled by her roots into womanhood by her first perm. But what do little Black girls lose when they lose their braids? The bonds with their mothers.

Inspired by Sunday hair braiding with her mom changed into Sunday chores once she received her perm, Malia wrote Rapunzel Jackson to showcase the importance of hair braiding in Black culture, along with the representation of Black children in fairy tales as heroines and heroes.
